The UNC Pembroke baseball team picked up a mid-week doubleheader sweep against the University of Charleston Golden Eagles at Florence Sports Complex in Florence, S.C. The Braves took Game 1 13-2 and Game 2 3-2.
The first four innings of the game were all Braves as they didn’t waste any time getting things going on offense and quickly finding the scoreboard. Blake Hinson brought home a runner on an RBI groundout to second and Isaias Villarreal scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
Villarreal added on to the Braves lead with an RBI double in the second making it 4-0. The Braves broke the game open with a few more runs in the third inning starting with Zane Brockman and ending with Luis Ramirez as the Braves now led 6-0.
After the Braves added on two more runs in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead into the fifth. The Golden Eagles managed to get on the scoreboard in what would be there only two runs of the game. UNCP leads 8-2. Braves wrapped up the scoring with a pair of runs including a three-run homer from Landon Lucas that made it 12-2. UNCP closed things out in the ninth for the win.
Matthew Toops took the loss for the Golden Eagles with a 2.0 IP, 5H, 4R and two batters walked performance on the mound.
Rhett James took the win and despite not recording a strikeout, he pitched 5.0 innings allowing two runs on two hits.
Game 2
In the second game of doubleheader the Braves found themselves in tight contest in an agreed upon seven inning game. The Braves outdueled the Golden Eagles in the second contest to complete the sweep.
Unlike the first game the Golden Eagles got the jump on the Braves early on with a RBI single from Trent Dosenbach and another RBI single from Lane Weismiller to make it 2-0 Charleston (VA)
Ramses Cordova put the Braves on the board in the fourth inning with an RBI single that scored two runners to tie the game back up at 2-2. Ashton Donathan gave the Braves the lead in the sixth with a late rally on a SAC Fly to make it 3-2 Braves. The Braves would close things out in the seventh for the win.
Scott Templeton came in the game as a relief pitcher and took the loss pitching 0.1 innings, allowing one run, walking one batter and striking one.
Seth Willis came in as the closer for the Braves in the late innings and recorded the win allowing one hit and striking out one.
The Braves will jump back into Conference Carolinas action this weekend in a three-game series against King beginning Friday at 3 p.m. The Game will be played at Florence Sports Complex due to ongoing construction at the Braves home park.
