The American Indian Heritage Center hosted a workout class inspired by traditional Native American powwow dances. The workout class is for people who would not only like to improve their fitness, but it is a way to learn more about indigenous traditions. UNCP students can build a community and have fun dancing with other students with fun and powerful music and different dance moves.

The workout class is an introduction to learning about the powwow custom in a safe space. The workouts allowed people to strengthen their bodies and minds by opening the UNCP students to a new culture. The class is a way for students to get out and have fun, through powwow dances.

“I’ve been dancing for the majority of my life, and I always want to be ready for the next powwow,” UNCP student Stevie Leviner said. “It is great when non-Natives come and explore and have fellowship with others in the community.”

Dancer and UNCP staff member for Undergraduate Admissions, Jasmine Jacobs leads the dance class. She has experience in teaching cultural classes and teaches dance at a dance studio, where she teaches jazz, hip-hop and musical theatre dancing but she specializes in Native American dances.

“Native Americans who aren’t familiar with the dances can incorporate them into their fitness to stay fit,” Jacobs said. “It can help them get in touch with their culture from a custom standpoint.”
