The lights dimmed, the music thumped, and the crowd inside Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court arrived as UNC Pembroke officially tipped off the 2025-26 basketball season with its annual Moonlight Madness celebration Thursday night.

The event, presented by McDonald’s, brought together fans, students, and alumni for an evening full of high-energy introductions, scrimmages, contests, and giveaways, a showcase of what promises to be another exciting year for Braves basketball.

The night’s biggest applause belonged to Tahj Johnson, a junior transfer from Hartwell, Georgia, who arrived at UNCP after a standout stint at Tallahassee State College. Johnson captured the crowd and the judges, with a series of soaring slams that blended power and flair, earning him the title of 2025 Moonlight Madness Dunk Contest Champion.

The night also marked a special moment for Braves fans as Javonte Waverly made his long-awaited return to a UNCP uniform. The veteran guard, known for his leadership and versatility, received a warm ovation from the crowd as he was reintroduced.

The men’s and women’s teams each took part in short scrimmages, giving fans a glimpse of the chemistry and depth that will define their seasons. The event also featured crowd contests, music, giveaways, and the opening of season ticket sales, offering fans a chance to secure their seats for the action ahead.

As the night ended, the buzz around the arena was undeniable, a clear sign that Braves basketball is back, and the expectations are high.
