In Conference Carolinas action on Wednesday night, the UNC Pembroke women’s soccer team demonstrated maturity and poise under the lights at Lumbee River EMC Stadium, defeating Ferrum 3-0. In the first-ever encounter between the two teams, the Braves won their second straight conference game, highlighting the difference between an established DII team and one that is still being established.
Senior forward Mercy Bell, whose poise and presence were evident, helped the Braves break through early in the first half after an evenly contested opening stretch. Bell’s well-placed goal, which was crucial in determining the tone of the second half, gave the Braves a 1-0 lead at the break.
The Braves used their experience to gain the upper hand after the half. Taking advantage of the fluid offense that Jasmin Diop, who ended the game with two assists, contributed to, sophomore Eli Soderberg doubled the lead early in the second half. Shortly after, Aubrianna Martin, a freshman, drove home the last dagger and sealed the 3-0 victory with her first career goal.
Even though the goal scorers were featured on the stat sheet, UNCP’s veteran core was the key factor.
The Braves (2-2-0, 2-0-0 CC) now turn their attention to building momentum in Conference Carolinas, while Ferrum (2-1-2, 1-1-0 CC) continues to adjust to the increased pace and depth of competition in their new division.
