A first-grade student at Pembroke Elementary School was suspended for 365 days today after bringing a firearm to school. Due to the child’s age, their name has not been released.

In a statement issued by the Public Schools of Robeson County, PSRC Chief Communications Officer Jessica Sealey said, “We commend the swift action of the staff member and administration this morning at Pembroke Elementary School. As always, we encourage all students and staff to speak up or report any activity that seems suspicious. We are grateful that the staff member trusted their instincts and acted quickly and professionally to ensure a safe environment for our students and staff.”

The firearm was found after a staff member at the school saw an unusual object on the student, so they pulled the student aside and discovered the gun on his waistband. Once they seen the firearm on the child, the student was immediately separated from his classmates and held in a secured location.

Local law enforcement is currently investigating the incident. No one was injured. Despite the discovery of the firearm, the school day continued on a normal operating schedule.

The district also noted the Public Schools of Robeson County’s Policy 4333  outlines prohibited behaviors and threats to safety, emphasizing that such actions will not be tolerated.
