“Captain America: Brave New World” is the latest film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this political thriller, Sam Wilson’s Captain America (played by Anthony Mackie) deals with the ramifications of the newly elected president Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (played by Harrison Ford)

The film’s first act is strong with an intriguing mystery, but the visual language of this film suffers from the prototypical “Marvel look.” It lacks an original aesthetic and looks like a high-scale car commercial.

The writing at points has strong moments but overall, it is underwhelming in its execution. The film tries to create an emotional foundation between Captain America and President Ross but feels rushed and hollow.

Even with the lackluster writing Anthony Mackie is a bright point playing Sam Wilson’s Captain America. While on the other hand, Harrison Ford’s performance feels forced and uninspired. Giancarlo Esposito has a small role in this film and even though it is always a pleasure to see him act his character felt unnecessary.

For director Julius Onah this is his first real major motion picture, and it feels like it. I can see that he has the potential to tell a great story in this film, but in my opinion, he doesn’t take enough risks. He’s playing it safe instead of swinging for the fences.

The visual effects are serviceable, in moments it had pretty good CGI, and moments where you can clearly notice the green screen in the background.

The third act is by far the worst part of this movie, specifically with the final fight scene. The film builds this final confrontation with a hollow emotional through line which makes the climax fall flat and seem pointless.

I think that this film is indicative of the future of the MCU, a fun uninspired safe film whose main goal is for mass appeal over creative and original storytelling.

Overall if you are a fan of the MCU and Captain American then you will have a fun time at the movies. If not then maybe “Captain America: Brave New World” is a Marvel movie you should skip out on.
