The Department of Mass Communication hosted a ribbon cutting event on Oct. 21 to celebrate the old and the new with the completion of the renovated TV studio in the Old Main building.

The TV studio serves a greater purpose for the mass communication students than just the utilitarian functions it offers. The TV studio represents a show of commitment to the students and their success.

“We are pleased that we are able to provide state-of-the art lighting and production facilities for mass communication majors and the university community,” Chair and Professor of the Department of Mass Communication Terence Dollard said. “The students and university community for years to come.”

The ceremony included Dean of College of Arts & Sciences, Dr. Richard Gay, the University Chancellor Dr. Robin Gary Cummings.and the University Provost & Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Diane Prusank.

“Mass communication is an evolving field and I’m proud that at UNCP our faculty, our curriculum, and our studio are now state-of-the-art,” Prusank said. “This means our students will not just be able to keep up with the field but be leaders in that evolution.”

This two-year project came about due to the necessary transition needed for the students of broadcasting to thrive. The TV studio space allows for increasing knowledge and experience for broadcasting students and helps the student gain a competitive edge.

“This studio represents the commitment to the mass communication students,” Dean of College of Arts & Sciences Dr. Richard Gay said. “It’s all about the students and the students’ success.”

The future of the generation will be seen on television and the broadcasting majors will have the opportunity to use the facilities and gain the knowledge and experience that will help them thrive and become successful when they are ready to pursue their careers in media.

This project displayed the hard work and dedication the faculty and staff have for the mass communication students. The crafting of this new TV studio for the students shows the quality of education that UNCP wants students to experience.
