Alpha Sigma Alpha spearheaded a fundraising campaign for the sorority’s top two non-profit organizations, Girls on the Run and Special Olympics. The fundraiser was called Give a ladybug her spots.

The ladybug holds great significance within the sorority, as its mascot is aptly named DOT an acronym representing the tennet of the sorority – “Donating Our Time” – and serving as a constant reminder to contribute to the community.

The event took place on the student center lawn on Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It featured sorority members Kacie Kaufman-Craig, Cynthia Popular, and Morgan Keeton.

Established at UNC Pembroke in March of 2014, the sorority strives to cultivate an environment that inspires people to engage in lifelong learning and giving back to the community.

“We aspire, seek, and attain,” Cynthia Popular, a junior majoring in business administration, said.

The event’s name and theme of giving a ladybug her spots, was represented by the sorority members inviting students to toss sponges covered in washable dye at them. This was aimed to visually solidify the association with ladybugs.

By the end of the event, sorority members were adorned with spots that resembled ladybug markings.

Kaufman-Craig, a senior majoring in exercise sports science at UNCP, as well as the social and service chairman of Alpha Sigma Alpha. Craig was optimistic about the whole event which motivated her sorority sisters to encourage more students to give and participate.

Alpha Sigma Alpha managed to raise more than $300, surpassing the amount they had already raised on Tuesday, Sept 26.

The profits obtained from this recent event will ultimately contribute to the earnings for next semester. The sorority has set a profit target of approximately $526, and they are aiming to reach it in the near future.

As Alpha Sigma Alpha continues to strive towards their goals, Craig is looking towards the future.

“I can’t wait to see what other events that we are trying to plan go into action.”
