Men’s basketball coach Ben Miller has been placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation in an incident that involved a UNCP student on November 1st, 2019.

According to the Lumberton Police Department report, Miller’s university issued vehicle was driven by Jasmine Powell, a 27-year-old student who was then involved in an accident, where she was charged with Driving Under the Influence, failure to reduce speed, and driving the wrong way on the highway. A blood alcohol content of .17, over twice the legal limit, was recorded during the traffic stop.

The accident, which occurred on Interstate 95, was a result of Powell driving the north on the southbound portion of 95. She struck multiple vehicles, including a bus and another passenger vehicle. When police reported to the scene, alcohol was found on the passenger-side floor of the university vehicle.

When asked for comment, UNC Pembroke Chief Communications Officer Jodi Phelps provided comment about the situation.

“I can confirm that Coach Miller is currently on leave, and the university doesn’t comment further on personnel matters.”
