UNCP was under Condition 2 when it got snowy in the area; the campus was opened up Wednesday.
Condition 2 was in effect at UNC Pembroke until 11.59 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, because winter weather had deposited ice and snow at the campus and much of the southeastern region earlier in the week.
Tuesday, University officials suspended in-person classes and online classes proceeded as planned. The decision followed hazardous road conditions across the surrounding area.
A number of schools and universities in North Carolina canceled classes or switched to online classes due to cold weather extending the icy periods on the roads and walks. By Tuesday afternoon, the administrators of UNCP declared that normal campus operation will resume on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 7 a.m.
Facilities crews were outside all day Monday and all day Tuesday clearing walkways, treating the icy surfaces and getting the campus ready to be safe again. Faculty and students could safely resume their work on campus when the conditions were improved.

Even though classes were canceled, a number of students went out in the open enjoying the infrequent snowfall. It was a first time experience for many foreign students, especially during winter.
An international student, Wanni, who is a Cambodian, mentioned that she had always wished to see some snow.
“I have never seen any snow, ” Wanni said. I wrote my name in it, photographed and forwarded the photos to my family back at home. It was my first time seeing snow and I will never forget it.”

Junior, Sanai Murray remarked that the weather disturbance was inconvenient yet she liked the precautionary measure taken by the university.
Murray said she would prefer not to have classes when the sidewalk is icy. The facilities did a great job to clear up so that we could safely get back.
By the middle of the week, the roads and walkways were better, and the campus functioning was normalized, but cold and wet weather persisted throughout the week.
