As icy conditions remain a concern across the region, UNC Pembroke officials have extended Condition 2 through 8 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27.
With low temperatures on Sunday, Jan. 25, and updated forecast information predicting another day of icy roads and poor driving conditions, the vice chancellor for Communications and Marketing recently updated university staff, students and faculty about the decision to maintain Condition 2 throughout Monday, Jan. 26, until the following morning.
Under Condition 2 status, the university is expected to operate only when necessary. Any operation not considered fundamental or mandatory is canceled, and nonessential employees are not expected to report to work. Supervisors are encouraged to prioritize safety, and students are urged to take necessary precautions and minimize travel.
According to a communication sent by Vice Chancellor Jennifer McCarrel on Friday, Jan. 23, UNC Pembroke was expected to remain under Condition 2 until Monday at noon. The most recent email, released Sunday around 9 p.m., followed continued review of weather conditions and regional travel impacts by the Emergency Operations Initial Threat Assessment Committee.
According to McCarrel’s report, all classes scheduled for Monday are canceled, along with all campus events and activities.
University leaders stressed that safety remains the top priority as freezing temperatures and icy roads continue to affect southeastern North Carolina.

“As we navigate this weather challenge, know that UNCP’s first and foremost consideration is your safety,” the message stated. “Please take caution and always exercise your best judgment.”
To best support students’ needs, dining operations hours will not be affected. The Wellness Center will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the Mary Livermore Library will operate from noon until 8 p.m.
University officials continue to urge students to stay alert and check BraveAlert messages, UNCP.edu and the university’s official social media accounts for the latest updates. The Emergency Operations committee is expected to meet again Monday to decide what campus operations will look like Tuesday.
For now, students are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel, walk carefully on icy sidewalks and keep safety in mind as the storm system moves through the area.
Again, stay safe and warm, BraveNation!
