Despite a season-high 13 service aces and a strong third-set push, the UNC Pembroke volleyball team couldn’t overcome a sluggish offensive performance, falling 3-1 (18-25, 19-25, 25-18, 20-25) to conference rival Francis Marion at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The Braves (9-8, 6-3 Conference Carolinas) hit just .085 from the net, well below their season average,  and were out-blocked 10-2 by the Patriots, who improved to 11-8 overall and 9-1 in league play. The loss marked UNCP’s first home defeat since Sept. 13 and their third loss in the last four matches.

“We didn’t have people to step up in areas we needed them the most,” said UNCP head coach Jaleesa Harper. “I mean, you can’t win games or be in position to win games with the lack of execution, and it’s been the story of our season to be honest. Our production doesn’t match our work ethic.”

Addie Decker led the Braves with 15 kills, while Abby Peduzzi tallied 15 digs, 4 service aces, and 7 kills in a strong all-around performance. Setter Tyler Patterson contributed 18 assists, 13 digs, and 3 service aces.

However, much of the night belonged to the Patriots. Francis Marion hit .211 as a team and capitalized on the Braves with 28 attack errors, many coming at key moments.

While Decker and Peduzzi continued to provide consistency, the Braves’ offensive rhythm never fully clicked, a trend that’s become familiar in recent matches. McKenna Hayes, returning from a lower leg injury, appeared to be limited but still managed 8 kills and 3 blocks.

The Braves took control in the third set behind a service ace from Patterson and back-to-back blocks from Hayes and Savannah Whaley, forcing a fourth set. But the momentum was short-lived, as the Patriots regained control early in the final frame and held off a late surge from the Braves.

The Braves will look to bounce back on the road October 17th, as they travel to face Mount Olive. First serve is set for 5 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
