Despite generating 11 shots and five corner kicks, the UNC Pembroke women’s soccer team struggled to capitalize on its chances Wednesday evening, falling 2-0 to Wingate in a non-conference matchup at LREMC Stadium.
The Braves (6-4-1) couldn’t break through a disciplined Wingate defense, extending their recent trend of offensive inconsistency. UNCP has now dropped to 6-10-2 all-time against the Bulldogs (7-4-0), who scored a goal in each half to secure the win.
Eugenie Amidou led the Braves with five total shots, including three on target, but her efforts were denied by solid goalkeeping and defensive play from Wingate. Reagan Carr and Mercy Bell also chipped in two shots a piece.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Sydnee Barndt’s shot deflected to Angela Maino, who redirected it into the net. Maino struck again in the 78th minute, slipping behind the Braves’ back line and slotting home her second goal to seal the result.
While UNCP edged Wingate in corner kicks (5-2), the Braves were out-shot 17-11 and failed to consistently threaten inside the box. The lack of execution in scoring areas proved costly in a match where possession and opportunities were evenly distributed.
The Braves will look to regroup and reignite their offense on Saturday, October 18, when they return to Conference Carolinas play at home against Belmont Abbey. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at LREMC Stadium.
