Family, friends, and faculty packed the Givens Performing Arts Center Friday evening to cheer on UNC Pembroke’s Braves Scholars, a group of high-achieving students recognized for their academic dedication and determination.
The Pembroke Scholars Awards Ceremony, held Sept. 12 from 6 to 8 p.m., honored students who have maintained a 3.2 GPA or higher, spotlighting the resilience and persistence it takes to excel in the classroom.
The evening opened with a warm welcome from Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Diane Prusank. Psychology major Catherine Gonzalez then introduced keynote speaker Dr. Sonyaliz Goveo, a veterinarian who shared her journey and inspired students with her words on perseverance and leadership.
Students were recognized individually for their accomplishments before Dr. Derek Oxendine, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success and Dean of University College, delivered closing remarks.
“Instead of giving up, you turned it into a bigger effort. That’s what resilience really is — finding the strength and the joy to keep going,” Oxendine said. “This celebration is not just behind your goal, but your story of resilience, success and strength. Joy is the strength that you carry along the way. And you, excelling students, you found the joy in the journey.”
The ceremony concluded with student Christian McArthur leading the alma mater Hail to UNCP. A reception followed in the Student Center Annex, where scholars and their families celebrated with a festive dinner provided by the university’s dining services.
For many, the evening was more than a simple awards ceremony. It was a reminder that behind every GPA is a story of effort, determination and the joy of pushing forward — the qualities that continue to define Brave Nation.
