Win Big This June in Old Main STREAM Academy’s Raffle. History was made on January 1958, and LIFE magazine documented it. The Lumbee people made national headlines when they drove Ku Klux Klan members out of Maxton on Jan. 18, 1958. The historic magazine is available for bidding at OMSA until June 26.

Old Main STREAM Academy is accepting bids this June, and you won’t want to miss what’s up for grabs. Old Main STREAM Academy is auctioning off seven January 1958 issues of LIFE magazine and two hand-stitched quilts.

According to the Museum of the Southeast American Indian, “LIFE magazine carried two articles on the subject. Letters poured into the area from all over the country, most of them supporting the Indians. The Klan did not really die that night, but it did learn to stay out of Indian Country.”

This historic issue of LIFE magazine isn’t the only item for sale. OMSA is also offering two quilts hand-stitched by fourth—and fifth-graders.

“Each grade level designed and assembled a hand-stitched quilt. Every student in each grade participated in this sewing project,” said Sandra Oxendine fourth and fifth grade teacher.

If you’re interested in owning a January 1958 issue of LIFE magazine or a student-made quilt, the bid form is located at the bottom of this article. Simply fill it out and submit it to Sandra Oxendine at Old Main STREAM Academy or email it to sandre.oxendine@oms.academy. The highest bidders will be announced Friday, June 27, via email. Be sure to check your inbox that day if you’ve placed a bid.

The handstitched quilts aren’t the only projects completed by OMSA’s fourth and fifth grade students. During the school year, they also created beaded projects. Parents can purchase their child’s project for $35 during the month of June, between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Cash and checks are accepted. If paying by check, please make it payable to Old Main STREAM Academy.

If you are not a parent but would like one of these beautiful beading projects, they will be available to the public in August when students return from summer break.
