The Lavender Student Alliance hosted a pride event on April 8 on the campus of UNC Pembroke inside the Dial Humanities Building. The event was held to celebrate the beginning of UNCP’s pride month and inclusivity on campus.

The setting was filled with decorations and lighting that reflected the colors of the rainbow, from LGBTQ+ pride flags to colorful balloons, along with signs that read ‘Love is Love’ and ‘Be Proud’.

The event began with a poetry presentation performed by Marah Mcphaul, discussing uncertainty in sexuality and personal struggles and was given a standing ovation in the end.

A highlight of the event was a performance from members of the LSA (Lavender Student Alliance) and students that were in attendance. They took turns singing their favorite pop songs, some of them being staples in the LGBTQ+ community. Attendees believe pride events on campus can be great for inclusivity

“In a rural area like Pembroke, it’s hard to find communities that you identify with,” Savanna Locklin said.  “This event is very special.”

Students also feel that pride celebrations are crucial for progress in America.

“With what’s happening in this country, pride events are absolutely necessary,” Noah Britt said.

From the performances to the colorful setting, the event commemorated the impact of the LGBTQ+ community and what it continues to embrace.
