UNCP students come together to showcase their talents at the World Languages program organized by the World Languages department and hosted by financial aid staff member Caleb Gilbert. The talent show showcases different art forms from different languages and cultures.
The talent show began with Peruvian native Claudia Blake performing a traditional dance of her country titled Marinera con Banda.
“I like sharing and expressing the dances that belong to my country of Peru,” Claudia Blake said. “I want people to understand the culture and the history of Peru.”
Julian Alvarado sang a song by Vincente Fernandez titled Mujeres Divinas.
“I play the guitar, and I just tried learning how to sing and I wanted to see if I would get nervous in front of people,” Julian Alvarado said. “I wasn’t so that’s good.”
Nikola Milutinovic sang a Serbian song titled Uzmi Me Kad Hoćeš Ti by Crvena Jabuka.
“I like Spanish music, but I had to sing a Serbian song,” Nikola Milutinovic said. “It is a very beautiful song.”
D.J Williams performed a piece that he created with his roommate on the piano.
“I just started learning the piano,” D.J Williams said. “I like Spanish music too.”
During intermission, Kimberly Fernandez sang No Me Queda Mas by Selena. Sky Carrasco followed next with a poetry reading, showcasing different art forms in the talent show.
Vanessa Mankatah sang a song by Enrique Iglesias and Juan Luis Guerra titled Cuando Me Enamoro.
“I’m Ghanian so speaking Spanish for me is weird,” Vanessa Mankatah said. “I learned this song from a telenovela.”
The talent show ended with the awards with Nikola Milutinovic winning third place with his Serbian singing, Claudia Blake winning second place with her traditional Peruvian dancing, and Julian Alvarado winning first place with his singing.
The World Languages department has different clubs and organization for those interested in languages. There is La Voz del Español, a Spanish conversation club to improve Spanish speaking skills, Acto Latino, a Spanish theatre group that performs Spanish speaking plays, OLÉ, an organization for anyone interested in the Latin culture, and Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society.
The World Languages talent show gives students the opportunity to express themselves by showcases their talent for the students and staff. It is an opportunity to watch the students be in a creative element and it is a chance to experience with music, dances, and other art forms of other cultures.
