The Student Health Services of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke held an educational game event about sexual health at the Student Center on Feb. 4. The hosts, Deidre C. Powell and Jaelyn Wynn, nurse practitioner and Assistant Director of Health Promotion of Student Health Services, aimed to educate students on sexual health topics like STDs, safe sex, and birth control.
The event began with a bingo game where when questions were asked, participants would place candy on the numbered squares in an attempt to have a full row. It then transitioned to a jeopardy game where the participants were given answers that they had to identify the subjects to.
In addition to the games, both Powell and Wynn gave facts on STIs and contraception. They answered questions from the participants as well as giving guidance on how to access student health services.
“I think UNCP should continue putting on more events like this. It can help raise awareness to sex and sexual health in general.” said Powell.
At the end of the event, the participants were given a box with a tutorial on how to use a condom, as well as two condoms and a free cup. Anticipation for more events like these seems to be on the rise.
