Track & Field Has Strong Showing at Braves Classic

The UNC Pembroke Track and Field Men’s and Women’s team had a productive weekend this past Saturday when they hosted the Braves Classic at the Dick & Lenore Taylor Track. Both teams combined for 10 event titles, 35 top-three finishes and a NCAA Division II Provisional Mark. They also claimed 50 personals best performances. 

Madison Gibson claimed the first title for the Braves, taking first in Long Jump 5.54m which was a personal best and Raven Haston also claimed a personal best in long jump with 3.57m, the Braves also had three jumpers finish in the top 5. Carina Fiorucci claimed the Pole Vault title, Kathryn Anderson took home the 5000m title with a time of 18:19.18 and Katie-Marie Sherlock rounded out the women’s titles with a first-place finish in the 400m dash. 

On the men’s side of things, the Braves managed to bring home some hardware as well starting with Bennie Oxendine, Cameron Ferguson, and Cole Thomas each claimed titles in their respective field events. On the track Makhel Henry won the 100m dash with a time of 10.92 seconds and Sean Townes took home the 200m title with a time of 21.76 seconds. In the team relay events the men’s 4x100m team consisting of Henry, Braylon Brooks, Ny’lon Fair-Steele and Travon Morrow took home the event title and posted a provisional mark with a time of 40.55 seconds. 

“I think as a collective we performed very well due to the countless PRs from various athletes…We are striving for bigger goals in the future leading up to conference action,” Braves thrower Cederic Douglas said. 

The Braves are back in action April 12-13 for the Trojan Relays at the University of Mount Olive.
