UNCP’s Department of Music ignited Moore Hall with vibrant jazz melodies, showcasing two talented jazz combos and debuting their, inaugural commercial music ensemble. Under the direction of Dr. Aaron Vandermeer and Dereck Day, the event highlighted the skills of numerous aspiring musicians and vocalists across four outstanding jazz combos. The debut of the commercial music ensemble stole the spotlight, marking its introductory performance as an expansion of the jazz combos program.

The auditorium was energized by the dynamic melodies of Todd Dameron, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Otis Redding, and other renowned artists. The combos presented soulful and emotionally resonant interpretations of both classic and contemporary jazz compositions. Each ensemble infused the timeless melodies with their unique interpretation and style;, captivating the audience with an undeniable energy and enthusiasm for the often underappreciated jazz genre.

Several soloists from the ensemble of combos made a memorable debut, captivating the crowd with their melodious voices and skilled instrumental performances. Among them, Jaylen Jones, a tenor saxophonist, stood out as the audience cheered and eagerly listened. His passionate performance earned him enthusiastic applause and hearty encouragement to continue. Jones wasn’t the sole artist to make a splash with their debut, the commercial music ensemble also captivated the audience, delivering a thrilling musical experience encompassing contemporary and gospel music alike.

“ It seemed to go well, for our first performance,” said Dereck Day, Director of Commercial Music Ensemble.

A considerable number of students, especially those not part of the jazz combos band but enrolled in his music and jazz appreciation courses, were required to attend concert ensemble performances as a homework assignment. They were expected to submit concert reviews afterward, and have their programs signed by the attending directors.

“The performance and the tone was amazing,” said Diamond Melendez, a senior at UNCP.
