Organizers of the “Beyond the Lines” media club at UNCP, hosted a “Readers Gathering” on Aug. 23. The big recommendation from the group for a ‘Must Read’ book is “The Fourth Wing” by Rebecca Yarros and the ‘Must Watch’ is “The Glory” available on Netflix.
The “Beyond the Lines” club was founded with the goal to discuss media and encourage critical thinking. They meet every Monday at 6 p.m. You can find meeting information and upcoming events on Brave Connect.
This meeting was part of the Find Your Community Week which was during the second week of the Fall 2023 semester.
Find Your Community week was dedicated to social events hosted by many clubs and community leaders trying to help build a stronger sense of belonging on campus between students and faculty.
“This was an intimate and welcoming event, I will definitely be coming back,” said Taona Namalima, a freshman in Business Administration.
The Readers Gathering event was held in the Office of Student Inclusivity and Diversity. Attendants went around the room introducing themselves and their favorite or most recent book or podcast.
Many of the students talked about “The Fourth Wing” by Rebecca Yarros, describing the book as a must read for those who liked the “Hunger Games” series by Suzanne Collins. The book gained popularity on TikTok within the months leading up to it’s release and is now a New York Time #1 Best Seller.
For students who enjoy International T.V. Drama, “The Glory” was recommended by the group as a must watch. It is #7 for Netflix’s Top 10 popular Non-English series.
“I’m still looking for my community but I do like this one because I feel like it is laid back.” said Kei’Ana Mims, Senior in Psychology.
