UNCP proudly presented acclaimed country singer Lorrie Morgan at GPAC for the homecoming alumni concert. Morgan entertained a near full house on Oct. 27. There were many excited people in attendance. For some this wouldn’t be the first time they go to see Lorrie Morgan.
“I’ve gone to Lorrie Morgan 3 times. I saw her once at the Alabama Theater, at Myrtle Beach, and another time at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, North Carolina and at another place I can’t remember off the top of my head,” Marvin Ragland said.
The GPAC lobby had two refreshments stations and vendors, one of them being a station for yearbooks for alumni. The table was run by the Mass Communications department chair Dr. Jamie Litty. Some of the people who attended the event weren’t even alumni or current students.
“I am not an alumni, I just happened to hear that Lorrie Morgan would be performing here and I showed up. My cousin was actually a guitarist for her at one point so that is pretty cool,” Anthony Ragland said.
The show was opened by the talented Morgan Spears. She walked on the stage with just her and her guitar. She stood out in a good way receiving multiple cheers and even got a standing ovation by her last song. Spears performed a mixture of her own songs and covers of songs by the artists that inspired her to get into music like Dolly Parton.
Spears knew how to engage with the crowd. She often times between songs would just talk to the audience. Oftentimes the audience would have a good laugh. She told her story of how she got into country music and how she began touring with Lorrie Morgan.
After a brief intermission, the main event started. Lorrie Morgan walked out on stage and the audience response was electric. Immediately the audience rose to clap. The cheers started and didn’t stop until she started talking.
Morgan was followed on stage by a few guitarists and a drummer and she brought the house down. Multiple people in the back rows were dancing and the front rows were full with people trying to get pictures of the artist while she was performing. The energy in the room was palpable and you could almost feel it.
