Swimming Goes 1-1 On The Day
The #17 ranked UNC Pembroke Women’s Swim team host a UNCP tri-meet on Saturday afternoon where they welcomed #12 ranked Wingate Bulldogs for a top-25 clash and a match with the Chowan Hawks. The Braves fell to the Bulldogs with a final score of 160-101 but claimed victory against the Hawks with a final score of 205-35.
Britta Schwengle led the Braves Saturday afternoon by claiming three individual titles with two of those titles being claimed by breaking facility records as she competed in the 200 ,500 ,and 1000-yard freestyle. She broke the Sue Walsh Swimming Pool Facility’s records in the 200-yard Freestyle with a time of (1:56.12) and then in the 1000-yard Freestyle with a time of (10:31.06).
In other events the Braves saw Mencia Martinez placing at the top of the podium in the 50-yard Freestyle with a time of (23.90) setting a NCAA B Standard Time in her season debut. Benedetta Pepe Pugliese claimed titles in the 200-yard Breaststroke and the 200-yard Individual Medley breaking a facility record with a time of (2:09.00)
UNCP (2-1) will compete on November 11th at home when they host Barton (1-2) and Roanoke (2-0) in a tri-meet at the Sue Walsh Swimming Pool.
Braves Shutout West Virginia Wesleyan On The Road
The UNC Pembroke football team took a trip to West Virginia Saturday afternoon for a Mountain East Conference matchup with the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats. The Braves got off to a hot start and didn’t look back domination four quarters of football en route to a 56-0 win on the road marking the programs first shutout win since the 2014 season.
Colin Johnson finished with 19-for-28 completions throwing for 281 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 85 yards on 11 attempts. Malik Tobias recorded 63 yards on three receptions and a touchdown and Trey Dixon followed with 81 yards on five receptions and a touchdown. On the defensive side of things the Braves had themselves an afternoon breaking a record for most TFL (Tackles For Loss) in a game with 17 with Sean Hill and Jamae Blank leading the way with a few solo tackles themselves.
It is officially homecoming week as the Braves (5-3, 4-3 MEC) will return home Saturday afternoon for the homecoming game with kickoff set for 3 p.m when they welcome Glenville State (4-3, 3-3 MEC) for a Mountain East Conference matchup.
Soccer Claims Key Conference Victory In Win Over Barton
A late goal by Mercy Bell helped propel the UNC Pembroke women’s soccer team to a key 2-1 win on the road in a Conference Carolina match with the Barton Bulldogs. The win for the Braves gives them a three point lead ahead of Francis Marion for the lead in the East Division with two matches left till the Conference Championship Tournament.
Bell finished with two goals scoring in the 21st minute and the goal that took the lead in the 74th minute and with those two goals she finds herself atop the NCAA Division ll leaderboard for goals. Anna Grossheim finished with six total shots with five on goal shots and racking up assist. Chiara Coppin on defense held Barton to just one goal as the goalie in the win.
The Braves (9-3-2, 7-1-2 CC) will be back at home for the second Battle of l-95 when they welcome Francis Marion (7-4-3, 4-3-3) for a pivotal Conference Carolina matchup set for 7 p.m at LREMC Stadium.
