The first ever block party and fashion show was held during Parent and Family Weekend hosted by Campus Engagement and Leadership. The event was held at the Student Center Lawn on Friday, Sept. 15, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
The focus of the night was the fashion show which lasted the duration of the block party.
The fashion show aimed to feature the many cultures on campus, and included students from different communities all around the world wearing formal regalia and popular clothing of their cultures.
Cultures included in the show were from America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Music from each culture was played as students walked the runway representing the communities the students were walking for.
“I’m the only Hmong here and so my nationality’s not really known in this area,” Lisa Vong, a sophomore who walked for Asia said, “I thought it’d be really nice to show some diversity, show my culture to the people.”
Vong was wearing a traditional Hmong hat made of aluminum with a matching necklace.
At the beginning of the fashion show, Ethan Oxendine played the cording flute to start the event which was followed by the new American Indian Heritage jersey being debut by the UNCP mascot, Brave Hawk.
During the block party, different stations were setup for attendants to play such as giant Jenga, corn hole, and temporary ink tattoos.
The show also featured a traditional couple dance by Acto Latino, a Hispanic student group on campus. They danced to mark the start of Hispanic Heritage Month which lasts from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.
