The UNCP softball team faced off against with the Georgia Southwestern University Canes in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Saturday at the Lady Canes Softball Field. The Braves took both games of the twinbill into extra innings and while they came out victorious in game one when they broke the scoreless stalemate for a 1-0 win, they would drop game two 5-6 after their host would score a pair of runs in the bottom of the 10th.
Game 1:
Through eight innings the two teams were in a deadlock battle with the end nowhere in sight. This battle of defensive powers lasted for a total through regulation in which neither opponent was able to score until the bottom of the ninth when the Braves finally climbed on the scoreboard first with a perfect team effort.
Freshman Cameron Davis would score the only run for the Black and Gold in the bottom of the ninth after she got on base with a leadoff single. A sac bunt from junior Alex Watkins, a single from junior Kaitlynn Norton and a bunt to the plate from sophomore Tatum Brummitt brought Davis in for the game-ending score to secure a final score of 1-0 in favor of The Braves.
Game 2:
The Braves started off strong in the first three innings and built a 3-0 lead before the Canes started their comeback by scoring their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning. They would tack on three more runs to just one for the Braves to knot the score at 4-4 through seven innings.
The two teams traded a pair of scoreless frames to force another extra inning in which the hosting Canes came out on top with two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to secure a 6-5 victory to split the doubleheader. The Braves now have an overall record of 18-22 on the year which includes a 5-9 clip in conference play.
