The UNCP Baseball team put up a strong fight Wednesday night in their game against the Royals of Queens University, however, were upset in the final innings of the game came up just short of victory at 11-12. The Braves were coming off of a big win Sunday against Francis Marion University, in which they beat the Patriots 23-10. They brought tremendous energy into the game, having two huge frames where they tallied four runs.
Both teams recieved stand out performances from multiple players. For the Braves, Ethan Baucom, Luke Jackson, and Elijah Helton all had outstanding outings at-bat. Baucom churned out four RBIs and two home runs and Helton cleared the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning with a grand slam.
Offensively, the Black and Gold were able to compete against the Queens, however defensively there were a few errors in which the Royals were able to capitalize on. The Braves committed five errors over the course of the game which was the highest amount they have allowed in a single game this season.
The Braves had the game in hand until the top of the eighth inning when the Royals were able to rack up six runs and take a one-run lead. The visitors were up 12-10 until Zach Ghelfi scored off of a hit to centerfield bringing the Braves within one. They would fight on in the bottom of the ninth being and were able to load the bases, however, they weren’t able to score any more runs on the night.
The Royals secured the win in the bottom of the frame, dropping the Braves’ record to 18-20 on the season. They currently sit in ninth place in the Peach Belt Conference standings and will be looking to bring the momentum of their recent potent offense into their next game in a conference matchup against the Night Hawks of the University of North Georgia on Friday, April 12.
