The UNCP softball team faced off against the Bearcats of Lander University in a doubleheader at the UNCP Softball field on Apr.6. The two teams would split the twinbill in a Peach Belt Conference matchup with the Braves winning the first game 6-3 and the visiting Bearcats captured the second game 9-1.
Game 1:
The Black and Gold came into the first game of the doubleheader riding a four-game winning streak and extended it to five-straight thanks to a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning off the bat of freshman slugger Cam Davis.
That would put the Braves up 5-2 for what would be all the runs they needed to win the first game of the twinbill. The victory didn’t just extend their current winning streak, it also ended a four-game losing streak in the series between the two teams for UNCP.
Game 2:
The Braves would have their five-game winning streak snapped in game two of the twinbill after falling behind early and only managing to record one run after their red-hot bats as late cooled off.
It was a close contest through the first four innings until the offense of the Bearcats exploded in the top of the fifth. What was a just a two-run deficit at 3-1 became a seven-run hole at 8-1 of which the Braves were not able to climb their way out of, forcing the mercy rule after six innings. Davis scored the only run for the Black and Gold in the bottom of the fourth after she doubled to left field and was brought home thanks to a single up the middle by junior Alex Watkins.
