    1. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions.

The professors, faculty and staff are here to help you. So, raise your hand, stop by office hours or send an email. Don’t be intimidated by PhDs, or other academic or departmental titles. Ask questions, because if you never ask, you’ll never know.

    2. Studying is essential.

You might not have needed to study in high school, but this is college. Studying is necessary. Form a study group of classmates. Make flashcards. Take notes in class to review and study. You’ll thank me later.

    3. Be responsible.

You’re an adult now and you’re free to make your own decisions. No one else can make them for you. So, be responsible. The decisions you make now have a lasting effect on your future, so make good ones.

    4. Be social.

Socializing can help decrease feelings of stress and loneliness. Don’t be shy and don’t spend your entire first semester or year hiding in your dorm or car (for commuter students). Attend social or campus events, relax, unwind and take a break from your studies.

    5. Make good friends.

Good friends are so important to have in college, especially as you begin. Good friends are individuals who share some of the same goals and will be there to support and encourage you when you need them most.

    6. Find an Outlet.

Everyone needs an outlet, or something to help them relieve stress. Whether it be exercising in the gym.

    7. Take Your Time.

Don’t rush into declaring your major until you are sure of the field you are interested in going into. Most universities don’t require you to claim a major until the second semester of sophomore year. Talk to your adviser. Take your time to decide what is right for you. Never let anyone or anything cause you to rush into making any decisions you aren’t ready to make yet. You have plenty of time.

    8. Explore.

Your time in college will teach you so much about who you are. So, as you embark on the adventure of finding yourself or learning yourself, remember to explore. So, try new foods. Make new friends. Explore campus. Immerse yourself in new cultural experiences. Study abroad. You won’t regret it.

    9. Get Involved.

Join a club. Attend university sporting events. Attend university programs and participate in activities. For, even though your college involvement in clubs or academics can be included on your resume, your experiences and involvement (or lack of involvement) will be what you remember when you look back on your time at this university. Do yourself a favor, get involved.

    10. Make the Most of Your College Experience.

No one wants to look back on their college experience wishing they would have had the courage to branch out or explore more. So, make the most of your time here, academically and personally. For, now you are making connections and friendships that will impact the rest of your life. Always remember that. In doing so, you can make the most of every moment here and watch how greatly each decision and relationship will impact your future.
