The biggest news that dominating the NBA, circulating throughout the media and being debated on every sports talk show, even more so than the Superbowl this week, was that the Los Angeles Lakers were aggressively pursuing the New Orleans Pelicans’ power forward Anthony Davis with the league trade deadline quickly approaching.
The young superstar nicknamed “The Brow”, for his patented and legally insured unibrow voiced his interest via his representatives that he does not wish to resign with the Pelicans and would instead like to play with his fellow NBA all-star Lebron James in L.A.
The NBA tread deadline came and went on Feb.7 and unfortunately for Davis, James, the Lakers as well as all Lakers fans everywhere their window to pair two of the game’s top talents closed for the rest of the season after the two teams could not come to terms before 3 p.m. eastern time.
The Pelicans asking price to part ways with the face of their franchise was too rich for the Lakers to agree to, but the aftermath of the failed trade could very well cause a rift within the team because the Lakers were reportedly willing to part with any player outside of Lebron in addition to draft pick compensation.
Laker legend and current president of basketball operations Earvin “Magic” Johnson was ready and willing to send former first-round selections Kyle Kuzma, Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, and multiple first-round picks in exchange for Davis.
Might the Pelicans president of basketball operations Dennis Lauscha and general manager Dell Demps regret not making the deal for L.A.’s young talented nucleus one? It’s certainly possible and some media pundits, as well as former NBA players and executives, are calling their unwillingness to trade a player that no longer wants to be apart of the organization a petty move made to spite Davis rather than doing what was best for the future of the franchise.
So where do the Lakers go now one might be wondering?
Well just imagine being Kuzma, Ball or Ingram last Thursday around 4 p.m. Imagine going to bed that night and waking up the next day knowing that the only reason that you’re still going to be suiting up in purple and gold and not packing your bags for the big move to the “Big Easy” was not because your team wanted to keep you, but instead simply because the Pelicans would rather reach one player a lesson or thought that you and your cohorts, along with a few future first round picks weren’t enough to tempt them to make the trade.
Now the Lakers front office, as well as team captain Lebron James, have to face the music. Not from disappointed fans or experts that got their predictions proven wrong, but to the players that they were aggressively trying to send out of town and how this team will be able to continue to contend to qualify for the postseason knowing that their combined worth and additional assets aren’t worth one supremely talented player.
