Senator Richard Burr is set to speak at commencement for the graduating class of Spring 2018. According to the Charlotte Observer, the National Rifle Association and similar groups have “spent nearly $7 million on behalf of Burr.”

About $5.6 million is also included as NRA groups aided Burr in his 2016 election against democratic opponent Deborah Ross. According to the NRA, both of North Carolina senators have an ‘A+’ rating from the NRA. After the Parkland massacre in February, Burr was asked about his stance on assault style weapons and if he believes they should be banned.

“I’ll leave it up to the investigators to finish their investigation,” Burr said. “I’ll wait until they come out with their full report.” The Senator has also supported the recent health care reform attempt, the Patient CARE Act, otherwise known as ‘Trumpcare’ while simultaneously voicing his criticism for the Affordable Care Act.

According to Ballotpedia, as recent as this year, Burr has supported motions to stop so-called ‘Sanctuary Cities’ from receiving funding. According to Chancellor Cummings, during Burr’s tenure as a North Carolina Senator he has actively worked to provide the Lumbee Tribe federal recognition.

“He is very much a Pembroke fan. He was here during Hurricane Matthew and around the area. He has done a lot of work with Lumbee recognition for the tribe and has been very involved in the area,” Cummings said.
