The UNCP cross country teams travelled to Charlotte to compete in the Queens Twilight meet on Sept. 9. Both squads registered runner-up finishes behind strong performances from Silus Kipckoech and Kristin Cain.
Men
Kipkoech, a freshman, picked up the individual title in the men’s 5K race with a time of 14:36. Logan Ward, who crossed the finish line in 15:16 to finish in eighth place, followed Kipkoech.
The Martin twins, Matthew and Jonathan, finished in 14th and 16th place respectively. Ean Ormsby and Curtis Haynie both finished under the 15-minute mark with times of 15:44 and 15:58.
UNCP finished behind Queens, who picked up the team championship with a score of 28.
The Braves tallied 52 points.
Women
Cain matched the fifth-best 5K time in program history by finishing in 18:59 for 12th place. Just two other former UNCP runners had matched that record previously: Livia Maheffie (2010) and Lea Tardanico (2016).
Molly McCann trailed Cain with a 14th-place finish. McCann clocked a time of 19:20. Sam Badami was the third Lady Brave to cross the finish line, registering a 15th-place finish in 19:42. She finished five seconds ahead of teammate and 17th-place finisher Michaela Reynolds.
Riley Axe was the final scorer for UNCP with a time of 19:51, landing her in 19th place.
Like the men’s team, the Lady Braves fell short of Queens in the team standings. Queens landed runners in first, second, fifth, sixth and seventh place to finish with 21 points. UNCP finished far behind with 70 points.
