Braves Successful in Indoor Track Opener

The UNC Pembroke men’s and women’s track and field teams opened up their indoor season at the Art and Linda Maillett UNC Open.

A combined 11 personal best were broken and 13 top 10 finishes were registered to highlight action at the meet Jan. 14.

Michael Powell came home with a solid finish at the meet, he crossed the line in third place (8.51 seconds) in the 60-meter dash finals for the Black and Gold.

Powell led the way for the Black in Gold in the 200 meter dash coming in 12th (23.44 seconds), followed by Brett Godwin (15th, 23.59 seconds).

Jamel Jefcoat also found himself in the third place position in the triple jump with a 13.81 meter leap.

For the throwers Evan Guinn threw 14.53 meters for fourth place, followed by teammate Dillon Perry in fifth not far behind with a 14. 34 meter lob in the weight throw.

Perry also launched a fifth place throw in the shot put (13.80m), followed by Nathanael Stainback’s eighth place throw of 13.45 meters.

Michael Zimmerman closed out the top 15 in long jump with a leap of 6.17 meters, while Mason Crawford also made a top 15 finish in the 400 meter dash (53.35 seconds).

Lyric Troy was the top performer on the women’s side for third place in the triple jump (10.78m), followed by teammate Erica Williams (seventh, 10.28m).

In the weight throw freshman Leanna Jacobs competed in her first colligate meet to finish in fifth place (11.64m), Kelsi Sheldon (12th, 10.43m) and Valerie Vinokur (13th, 6.68m) followed behind.

Troy posted an 11th place finish in the long jump with a leap of 4.97 meters.

No distance athletes competed in this meet.
