Sophomore Jordan Walshaw registered his second and third goals of the season, and the UNCP men’s soccer team held strong through a late rally by the visiting Barton Bulldogs to earn a 2-1 victory Sept. 14 at Varsity Grounds.

It was the 18th consecutive victory against Barton for the Black and Gold (2-2-0), who remained undefeated at home. Barton (2-3-0) last topped the Braves in 1998.

Freshman Lucas Gusmao notched his second collegiate victory between the pipes for UNCP, tallying two saves in the contest. Jens Madsen Hordvik allowed both goals for the Bulldogs while picking up one save.

Walshaw put the Black and Gold on the scoreboard in the 16th minute.

Redshirt freshman Ruben Taks passed to streaking sophomore Izzy Evans, who found an open Walshaw near the box.

The Black and Gold struck the ball for a final time at the 70:32 mark off a deep shot from Walshaw.

Sophomore Josh Hanratty and freshman Ties van den Eijnde assisted on the play.

The Bulldog offense finally clicked into gear when Alex David launched a header past Gusmao at the 76th minute mark for his third goal of the season.

The visitors continued to attack with four shots on target in the final stages of the contest, but the freshman goalkeeper was able to dash any hopes of a comeback for the Bulldogs.

The teams matched each other in the shots category with both sides numbering 10 shots apiece, three of which were on target.

Walshaw led the Black and Gold with five shot attempts. Evans registered two of his own, although neither one was on target.

David took charge for the visitors with three attempts including the lone goal.

Javier Alcarria and Danny Peru also tallied quality strikes for the Bulldogs.

Three yellow cards were given to the home team during the match-up.

The match kicked off a four-game home stand for the Black and Gold.
