The women’s soccer team proved to be a force to be reckoned with, opening up the Peach Belt Conference play with a 3-0 victory against Clayton state Sept. 21.

The rainy conditions didn’t seem to rattle the Black and Gold, who scored their first goal of the day within the first minute of play.

Freshman Carly Rochelle saw an opportunity and took it, nearly 45 seconds after kick off.

Carolina Sanchez earned the first assist of the night after firing a shot on goal that bounced to Rochelle, who tapped the rebound into the back of the net, for her first goal of the season.

Coming out of the first half, in the 49th minute freshman Kristina Stevenson sailed a ball into the top left corner from 23 yards out, to put the Lady Braves up 2-0.

Rochelle dribbled through the defensive line for a one on one with Clayton States’ keeper in the 60th minute.

The forward capitalized on this opportunity, one of her four shots of the night, to cap off the game at 3-0. The goal was Rochelle’s second of the season.

Clayton State out shot the Braves 16-13, however only one of UNCP’s shots were not on goal while the Lakers only earned six shots on goal.

Katie Watkins, Stacey Scott, Kate Weisner and Mackenzie Write all racked up two shots.

This was goalkeeper Gina Ryan’s third shutout of the season for the Lady Braves. The freshman starter is leading the conference in save percentage and goals against.

Two cautions and one red card was issued during the match-up, all being awarded to Clayton State.

The Black and Gold now stand (4-2-0, 2-0-0 PBC).
