On Saturday, Oct. 11, the Jones Athletic Center Parking Lot filled with energy and excitement as the University hosted its annual Homecoming Tailgate before the football game against Shorter University. Despite the rain and chilly weather, Braves of all generations came together to celebrate one of UNCP’s most beloved traditions.

Every year, tailgating at UNCP’s Homecoming is more than a pregame event. It is a moment that brings together students, families, alumni, and friends to share food, music and laughter before cheering on the Black and Gold. This year’s tailgate once again proved how strong the Brave Nation spirit is, setting the tone for a great day that ended in victory as UNCP defeated Shorter University.

The Jones Athletic Center Parking Lot transformed into a lively celebration, with alumni tents, student organizations, campus services, fraternities and sororities all joining the fun. Each group brought its own spirit to the event, offering games, giveaways and plenty of good food that kept the energy high throughout the day.

The smell of food filled the air as people shared meals and laughter under the tents. Many joined in spontaneous line dances, enjoying the rhythm and the lively atmosphere of the day.

Despite the steady rain, spirits stayed high. Umbrellas and ponchos covered the crowd, but nothing could stop the fun. Even on one of the coldest days of the semester, the warmth of the people and their school pride made it feel bright and joyful.

Willis Glassgow, the university photographer, said events like this remind everyone of the deeper meaning behind Homecoming. “Homecoming is a great way of getting together with friends and family that you have not seen in a while,” Glassgow said. “It is a fantastic way to catch up with so many all at once.”

Homecoming at UNCP is a time to reconnect, celebrate, and reflect on what it means to be part of the Brave Nation. The Tailgate Zone once again proved to be the heart of that celebration, serving as a place where everyone, no matter the weather, could come together under the same colors of black and gold!
