The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) celebrated generosity and progress at the Celebration of Philanthropy event, held on Feb. 27 in the James A. Thomas Hall. The event, centered on “Building a Brave Future,” recognizing donors who contribute to, the universities growth, and innovation.
UNCP’s commitment to student success was highlighted through the stories of three scholarship recipients who have directly benefited from donor support. Graduate student Anna Duncan, senior Cameron Holder, and senior Jacob Oxendine took part in a discussion panel, sharing how philanthropy has transformed their academic journeys. The event underscored the essential role of donors, in ensuring university’s continued advancement.
The Celebration of Philanthropy not only honored UNCP’s benefactors but also provided a platform for students to express their gratitude.
Duncan, a graduate student in Public Administration, was awarded the James F. Buddy Bell Memorial Endowed Scholarship as well as the UNCP Friends of the Library Endowed Honors Scholarship.
Holder, a Theatre major, received the UNCP Endowed Auxiliary Scholarship and the Louis & Millie Oxendine Scholarship.
Oxendine, a Biology major, was granted the Harry Hutchison Gibson Endowed Scholarship. These students share their experiences in aspirations during the discussion panel, emphasizing how scholarships have allowed them to focus on academics and pursue their dreams without the burden of financial stress, their testimonials highlighted, the direct impact donor’s contributions have on shaping the future of UNCP students.
During the event, Chancellor Robin Cummings addressed attendees and recognized the donors as the “cornerstone of growth and innovation.” He emphasized that without their support, UNCP would not be thriving as it is today.
Cummings’ remarks reinforced the idea that philanthropy fuels not just student success but also faculty support, research advancement, and campus improvements.
