A “Talking Circles” event provided students with a platform to engage in meaningful discussions on topics of their choice. Led by students, the event aimed to foster open dialogue and connection within the university community.

“We made this event possible so students could have a safe space to welcome diverse group of attendees to interact and share their perspectives on various topics with their peers,” said James Rudd of American Indian Heritage Center

Jared Jacobs, a Junior Mass communication major said he attended the event because he thought it would be interesting “I can rate the event an eight because I enjoyed the time talking to my peers, they were few people, but it was a great experience.”

Attendees expressed a wide range of reasons for participating, including a desire to learn from their peers, explore different viewpoints, and engage in conversations that matter to them. Many students came with specific topics in mind, while others were open to discussing whatever emerged during the circle.

“I came here today because I care about my peers, and I love being in a talking circle because its informative,” said Raven Boone, a Junior Political science major.

Throughout the evening, attendees engaged in thought-provoking conversations on subjects such as cultural identity, college life, social justice, and the importance of community. The informal atmosphere allowed for a free exchange of ideas and provided a safe space for students to express themselves.

“Honestly I didn’t expect the turnout and we talk about so many interesting topics and the event turnout to be a successful which I rate a 10,” said Unmai Arokiasamy, American Indian Studies major.

The Talking Circles event at UNCP’s American Indian Heritage Center exemplified the center’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and providing a platform for open dialogue within the university community.
