The 2023 BraveNation Powwow and Gathering (BNPG.) was a celebration of American Indigenous culture and tradition held at th

Vendors and dancers from the local area and outside of North Carolina participated.

There was an increase in attendance compared to 2022, with over 2,000 attendees. Many adults, children, and students attended.

The powwow was a cultural gathering where indigenous people celebrated and honored their heritage through dance, music, and ceremony.

There was a drum contest and several dance competitions for adults, teens, and juniors.

The special contest consisted of a “Sidestep for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women” (MMIW) and the “Red Dress Dance Special for Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women” (MMIW.)

Powwows begin with a Grand Entry and a prayer to bless the circle, the dance arena.

Viewers can watch the dances along the sidelines and seats inside the gym. Walking across or in the circle is disrespectful because it is for the dancers.

Dr. Ashley McMillian is the director of the American Indian Heritage Center at UNCP.

She said the powwow was a chance to bring the community together to celebrate their culture and traditions. She said that many people traveled to participate in the event.

Students at UNCP are encouraged to experience the powwow to learn more about the culture and history of the community.

The event is a learning opportunity for students to experience.

“I am Native American so it means a lot to me to be able to share my culture with other people in the community and students on campus,” junior Jayden Worriax said.

The powwow at UNCP was a time for many to immerse into the great culture and history of the Lumbee Tribe and other Native nations in organizations around North Carolina.
