As the NFL draft draws closer and closer here are some questions that are circulating that pertain to prospects and their draft stock as well as their potential and projected impacts at the next level.
What will be the domino effect if Kyler Murray is taken with the No.1 overall pick?

How did Kyler Murray go from being considered as a fringe top 10 pick to being debated as being the first quarterback off the board to now being discussed as heavily presumptive first overall pick after not evening running or throwing a single pass at the NFL scouting combine this past weekend?

Well, the answer is quite simple really. All he did was stand up against a wall to get his height measured and hop on the scale to see how much he weighed with almost nothing on. Every team and fan of football is familiar with Murray’s playmaking prowess that he exhibited last year for the University of Oklahoma on his way to winning the Heisman trophy.

For months all of those very same people have heard about the one black cloud that was casting a shadow of doubt over what will most certainly be a promising career and that was his official measurables. The skeptics were proven wrong when Murray measured in at 5”10” 1/8 and weighed in at 207 pounds at the combine.

The mystery circulating his height and weight have been solved and now he is in being seriously talked about as going No.1 overall to the Arizona Cardinals or whoever is willing to pay a king’s ransom for Cardinals’ Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury’s “Golden Boy” in Murray. If he were to be taken with the top overall pick it would send a ripple effect throughout the NFL that would not only shake up the first round of the draft but also the futures of many players already entrenched in the league. Here’s a list of domino effects that could fall if Murray is taken first overall:

  • Josh Rosen would get traded: It hasn’t even been a full year since the Cardinals used the 10th overall pick in the 2018 draft to take UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen. If Murray were to be taken by Arizona it would spell the end for Rosen after a one and done season in which he threw for just 2,278 yards and 11 touchdowns to 14 interceptions in 14 games during his rookie campaign.
  • If Rosen was to be traded: There’s already a bit of a shortage for starting jobs for veterans in the league that don’t come with the “place holder” insignia that means they won’t be the long-term solution for a franchise but rather a one or two year stop gap until they can draft or develop their incumbent. If Rosen were to b dealt that would mean one less opportunity for vets like Teddy Bridgewater, Josh McCown, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brock Osweiler, and Tyrod Taylor, all of which look to find a seat in the game of musical chairs that ensue at the quarterback position every offseason.
  • If the Cardinals trade out of the top slot: If a team that is searching for or looking to upgrade at their franchise quarterback position and are willing to pay a hefty enough price to persuade Arizona to trade the No.1 overall pick to select Murray, then Rosen’s job would be safe, and that team could have the generational talent. As of right now, the Oakland Raiders are rumored as early favorites to trade for the top pick as they hold three first round picks that include the fourth, 24th and 27th overall selections.
