The UNCP women’s basketball team kicked off its season with an impressive showing from its newcomers, topping the Fayetteville State Broncos 72-65 on Nov. 11 at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
Transfer redshirt sophomore guard Tee Graham led the Lady Braves in both scoring and assists with 15 points and five, respectively. Fellow transfer junior guard Alecia Hardy was the team’s second leading scorer with 11 points of her own.
The Lady Braves were led in total rebounds by another transfer in redshirt senior Kasey Drayton, who tailed six offensive and two defensive rebounds. Senior guard Eboné Stevens led all returning players in scoring with nine points and added three assists.
UNCP got off to an early lead with a 7-0 run. The Lady Braves led by as much as 19 points with just over three minutes left in the first half. Fayetteville State gained momentum to close the deficit to 38-28 at halftime.
Early on in the third quarter, the Broncos went on a 13-0 run while holding UNCP scoreless for nearly two minutes. After Hardy connected on a critical 3-pointer, the Lady Braves went on the final run that would put the game away for good.
The Braves scored 31 points off of 28 turnovers by the Broncos. They also held a 27-8 advantage over the visitors in bench points.
